Luna is a very sweet, cuddly pitty estimated to be a little over a year old. She comes from a unique situation in that although she appears to have been adequately care for, she was living in a home in which there was extensive intimate partner violence. Luna became pregnant when she, herself, was just a puppy. A few months after Luna gave birth to her puppies, her human “mama” had finally had enough and felt empowered enough to leave the violent relationship. Entering a domestic violence shelter, she had no other choice but to surrender Luna to Rocket Dog Rescue.
Luna is a bundle of love. She is a very friendly, playful, smart, and eager to please pup. She is living in a foster home with a 3-year-old Pit mix and she just loves to engage him in play. She has been around rambunctious dogs, children, loud noises (i.e. fireworks), crowds, and outdoor restaurant settings, and her behavior has been stellar! When she goes on walks, she wants to give and receive some love from every person she passes, and wants to play with every single dog around her. Her foster moms and well-trained canine brother are helping her to learn how to focus on her walks and avoid enticing distractions. She is a great running partner, though, and has done quite nicely running alongside her person.
Because Luna is very smart and eager to please, she is VERY responsive to voice corrections, and learns very quickly. For example, in her foster home, she quickly learned that furniture was off-limits (though she initially tried to sneak up and cuddle on the couch with her people). She is still a puppy, and will try to chew whatever looks good to her. However, when she has tried to chew an off-limits item, like the leg of the dining room table, all she has needed is a firm voice correction, and redirection to her chew toys. With the help of these consistent limits, Luna has learned that her chew toys and bones are for her to do as she pleases, and she has not destroyed one thing in her foster home.
Luna does not like to be away from her people, and has some separation anxiety when left home alone. This is probably due to her history of being constantly available when her human mama needed comfort, along with the recent separation from her. Her foster moms have been working on crate training her, and spending short periods of time away from her so that she can slowly learn to be away from her humans. Her adoption would be most successful in the following situations: 1. With a person/family that works from home; 2. With someone who would be willing/able to take Luna to doggy daycare while they work; 3. With someone who can take her with them to work (her foster moms are therapists and think Luna would make an amazing therapy dog!…she’s that great with everyone!); or 3. With a person/family that can take a week or two off of work to slowly accustom her to being home alone. Since Luna has been in her foster home, she has shown incredible improvements with her separation anxiety, but her foster moms want any potential adopter to be fully aware that this is an issue that they will have to continue to work on with Luna.
Luna is quickly learning basic commands. She knows “sit” and “down” and is working on “stay” and “off.” She rides nicely in the car; is now fully crate trained at night; and now that she has healed from her spaying, is showing great strides at being potty trained. She is not a barker, and greets strangers and familiar people alike with a happy, wildly wagging tail. She takes treats very gently. She has proven to have a steady disposition, and while she has that puppy energy, she has been non-reactive even when encountered by aggressive or assertive dogs. Though not necessary, Luna would do great in a home with other dog(s) because she absolutely loves to hang out and play with them.
Doesn’t Luna sound awesome?? Well, she IS awesome! She is a sweetheart who wins the heart of everyone she meets. Her foster moms guarantee that she will melt your heart. She is a very special girl who deserves to settle in to her forever home as soon as possible.
