Medium (25 – 60 lbs) Learn MorePaws is a wonderful, intelligent, impressive dog. We estimate that he is about 1–3 years old, and seems to be a Corgi/Shar Pei mix (maybe some pitbull). He looks small but at 44.4 lbs, he’s got a lot of strength in his compact body! (Especially in that oversized Shar Pei head).
Personality: Reserved, dignified, alert and snuggly
Paws carries himself with a regal demeanor, and takes seriously his investigations of noises and hourly loop around the house. Paws isn’t a dog to beg for attention or interrupt you constantly, though he will make sure he is by your side when you get up to move to a different room, and is always happy to come over for a hug or join in on fun and games.
Paws loves to jump up on the couch and take a little nap, or come lean against you for some back scratches. He enjoys walking, playing, sniffing, and eating, but can be easily distracted from any of those things if need be. Paws loves curling up on his dog bed with a toy or treat to gnaw on — he has even been spied a few times rolling on his back making happy sounds, tail wagging as he plays with a toy in his mouth!
Other dogs & other people: Wary but ready to mingle
Paws takes a little while to really warm up to people; he can seem aloof, but after you spend a few hours with him he’ll start hanging out with you. He can get a little spooked when people he doesn’t know well reach for him, and might shimmy backwards if he feels insecure. While he has barked at a couple of people — both tall men — he has warmed up to those he has a chance to get used to (though he can still be wary when meeting them again).
There are some areas of training Paws will need help in. When on walks, he finds other dogs very exciting and barks at them unless distracted, a habit that will require some time and attention to break. Stemming from this, he will also look out windows and bark at dogs passing his home if given the opportunity. His foster parents are confident that some training, love, and time are all Paws needs to overcome this insecurity, but he will need parents ready to help him learn outdoor manners as good as his indoor manners.
Manners: Calm, trainable, but new to the game
From day 1 with his foster parents, Paws has been great around the house and very good on walks. While his foster parents are still working on getting him to consistently walk on a loose leash, he has always been attentive to where they are, and regularly checked in between sniffing things. Paws will pull a lot if he just has a collar on, but with a front-connecting harness (aka “easy walker”) he is very manageable on the leash.
Paws is learning crate training quickly. Currently he gets fed in his crate and sleeps there at night. He may whine a bit (for 5 min or less, and quietly) when you first put him in, but he will soon stop and go to sleep. Paws has never had trouble making it through the night accident-free.
When we first got Paws he knew no tricks other than coming when his name was called. Paws has proven to be a smart and eager student, becoming proficient with “sit” in 3 days, and is now working on “down”. When he first came home Paws had two small accidents, but as he has adjusted to his new surroundings and schedule there have not been any more incidents.
A smart, energetic, calm friend
If you want an active but not hyper dog, who likes to snuggle, is actively learning, and loves to explore, Paws may be the boy for you! He will do best in a home with parents who are willing to help train him and give him lots of pets and rubs.
