blackberry

Blackberry was rescued from the Formosan Mountains in Taiwan. He is a medium-build, approx 35 pound mixed shepherd-looking neutered male dog probably close to 2 years old, with his shots. He entered the USA on September 1, not knowing any English, but you would think he is a native Californian now - he has an amazing facility for learning new words and loves to respond positively to requests from his humans.

Blackberry is solid black with a beautiful silver undercoat. His fur is medium, not very shaggy or fluffy, very soft - and smells naturally sweet! His ears are one-flop down, one-semi-perk-up, and he loves to wag his long, silky tail.

Blackberry has superior dog-dog social talents, and although other dogs respect him, he manages to coax even the grumpiest dogs his size and smaller (even tiny) to play happily with him, and meets larger dogs with grace. He doesn’t pay any attention to cats.

Blackberry loves to sleep across the foot of a bed, and is reliably housetrained. His bark is big, and he is an effective and responsive watchdog, quickly learning what to bark at, and what not to bark at. He will need some more training on a lead, and will need to get used to the urban landscape, but his adaptability is amazing.

Blackberry would do well with a family that has one or more vigorously active humans who would love to run, hike, or bicycle with him (on lead). He would do well in a multiple dog household, and would like a yard or nearby park. We have not observed him with young children, but generally don’t recommend dogs his size for homes with children younger than 8. Like other shepherd-type dogs, he meets humans and sizes them up, and when he gives his love and trust, does so completely! He loves to “wrestle” so his new home should be ready to help him continue to learn good “bite restraint” in playtime and to “give” an object back. His English vocabulary already contains at least 50 words, many of them requests that he responds to. He would be okay for a first time pet owner with patience and persistence in helping him learn more English words in a calm, consistent way.

In short, Blackberry will be a Dog of Legend, giving his heart completely to his humans, and trying his intelligent best to always please and never disappoint them, the dog that Amazing Dog Stories are told about!
