Recommended Food and Treats

We strongly encourage you to stay away from corn-based meat biproducts typically sold in the supermarket. Though convenient and less expensive than our recommended brands, the truth is that these products are unhealthy and unethical. Meat biproducts and meat meal (a main ingredient in many commercial dog food brands) consist of rendered animal parts taken from euthanized or carcass animals. These parts are highly unnutritious and highly contaminated, not to mention cruel in their manufacturing. Please consider this when selecting food and treats for your companion animal. Please avoid IAMS brand pet food. To learn why go to www.iamscruelty.com.

Recommended Food Brands

Many of the brands above offer vegetarian dog food. To see a full list of cruelty-free food brands go to www.iamscruelty.com/notTested.asp.

Treats

All the brands above also offer healthy treats for your dog to enjoy. In addition, we recommend the following treats:

  • Stuffed Kongs
  • Fruits and veggies (if your dog is so inclined)
  • Cloud Star Buddy Biscuits

Why Stuff a Kong?

Dogs are animals that are genetically programmed to hunt for their food.
Part of the reason there is such a prevalence of behavior problems in pet
dogs is that they have so little mental challenge or work to do; their food is
given to them for free. Zoos have had some success in decreasing behavior
problems and improving the quality of life of many of their predator and
primate species by giving them problems to solve in order to obtain their
food. This same environmental enrichment concept can be applied to
domestic dogs, who thoroughly enjoy finding hidden food and unpacking
stuffed chew toys. Learn more and find recipes at www.kongcompany.com.
