I first met Mac when he was 14 weeks old. He, along with his brother, Cheese were at Sonoma County Animal Services, where I volunteer as a dog walker. On first meeting, my heart nearly exploded and when I heard that he needed a foster home for his shy/timid behavior, I stepped up and began working with him.
Over the course of the past three years, we’ve come a long way and he’s taught me so much, while he’s learned too. It’s been series of steps forward and backward – but he’s always had my whole heart. He’s crate trained, potty trained, loves working with you for treats. He’s learned that kitties and chickens are friends. He knows fun cues like sit, down, stay and come. He loves the agility course and have I mentioned the treats?! He’s food motivated and he especially loves chicken. He loves going for rides in the car and going for long walks and swimming too – he doesn’t mind a bit to be dried off before coming back inside from a wet adventure. He’s shy of new people and it takes a lot to earn his trust – but once you do, he proves he’s worth the wait. He’s not too sure of other dogs while on leash, but gets along well with my other confident dog and has attended the group doggy play dates at K9 Activity Club and has done really well with other dogs while there.
Living in the country has many advantages, but not so many for a fearful dog like Mac. Our area is now becoming more populated and without being able to build fences, we’re finding it more challenging to ensure Mac is safe from new people approaching him without proper management. It’s also too much space for a dog who is afraid of so many new things with too many new people in our area. This is the only reason why we’re trying to find Mac a new home. If things could stay the way they’ve been, we’d keep him. Though I am heartbroken, I am hopeful that we can find someone who can continue Mac’s journey.
Mac would like to find a family, preferable without children, in a patient home with a fenced back yard, where he can become accustomed to his environment and be managed if new people visit. He has such an ability to blossom with love, time, patience and space. Could you help me, find a way to help Mac?
Here’s a link to several videos of Mac doing Mac things like eating his breakfast with kitties walking around, spending time with chickens, doing the agility course, swimming, and coming when called. The link also has several photographs of him as well. If you are interested in meeting Mac, please just let me know and we can make arrangements.
