Medium (25 – 60 lbs) Learn MoreOnyx, a 2 year-old Formosan Mountain Dog, is an athletic and affectionate little dude with a soft coat of black and a dusting of red brown fur. He has beautiful brown eyes and a pink and black tongue.
Onyx is very well behaved – Emily Post would be proud of his manners! Onyx is house-broken, listens well, and easy to train.
Onyx is shy when you first meet him, but quickly you’ll discover he loves being the center of attention, leaning into you or politely putting a paw on your hand asking for more pets and scratches. His long legs fold up compactly making him an ergonomic lap dog (he only weighs 30 pounds).
Onyx has lots of energy, and would love to go on hikes or runs with his human. However, despite his athletic disposition, Onyx can also entertain himself. On days when he can’t get a big walk, Onyx will quietly entertain himself with a ball or activity toy. Onyx will do best in a household that can give him fun outdoor adventures, but he will be fine if they are not every day.
Onyx can be skittish if he is uncertain about people’s motives, or finds them unpredictable. Because of this we do not think Onyx should live in a home with children, or anyone who would have a hard time giving him his space when he needs it.
Onyx can get lonely if left fully alone, but has done very well when left in a place where he can see another dog. Because of this we feel Onyx would do best in a home with another dog, even if that dog is not up to being his playmate. Onyx currently is staying in a home with an older dog who is not interested in playing with him, and he’s still greatly benefited from being part of the pack.
Onyx will need time to build a bond with his person, but we believe once the relationship has been established he will be fine going off-leash in quiet areas. His joy in running super-fast and playing tag will make him a natural at the dog park.
Onyx is a cute, loving, very good boy who will thrive in a home that can show him affection, take him on adventures, and love him for the fun little dude he is.
(And don’t worry, he’s been eagerly putting on some weight since these photos were taken)
