Quix is a 3-5 year old, ~45 lbs, Catahoula leopard’s dog mix. He has a beautiful black, white, and brown coat with spots all over. His light brown eyes spend a lot of time looking up into yours, and he has a great big goofy grin.
Quix came to us from an animal shelter in the North Bay where he was held as evidence in a court case for two years. Now that he is out of the shelter, he has a lot of living to do!
Quix is a very affectionate dog and would love a home that can give him a lot of love. He likes snuggling on couches, in beds, being pet while near you, and generally being the center of attention. He is very friendly with new people and can’t wait until it’s safe for him to go someplace crowded so he can meet everyone there.
Quix is a high energy dog. He needs lots of physical and mental stimulation every day. For Quix, the ideal day ends with everyone snuggled on the couch, tired from a full day of vigorous activities.
He is very outgoing with people, and has thus far done well with other dogs, but he is still overcoming some anxiety from being in the shelter for so long. Quix finds social distancing from most dogs he passes on walks to be frustrating, which can result in some socially awkward behavior when he does get to meet another dog at first, but he is very happy to be with other pups once he’s gotten over any initial uncertainty. If he gets overly distracted, he can be brought back to attention with a treat and voice command. Because Quix enjoys the company of other dogs so much, and because of his need for a lot of stimulation, we feel he should be in a home with another confident dog (or two!).
Quix is an energetic dog who loves to roughhouse, which is very sweet but could be too rough for very small children. He is still figuring out his place in the world and life outside the shelter, so he can sometimes feel intimidated or uncomfortable somewhat suddenly (for example, when a human’s face is very close to his face). It is important that all his family members are old enough and dog-savvy enough to pick up on his early signals (leaning away, “whale-eyeing”) so that he doesn’t have to escalate up to growling in order to get out of the uncomfortable situation.
Because of this, we believe he would do best in a home with older dog-savvy kids and adults. He is high-energy and would like to be going on a nice long run every day, or at least a couple of walks along with plenty of time for roughhousing with doggie siblings, and some training from his human family. Quix is very athletic and extremely food motivated – maybe he could be the Bay Area’s next great agility champion! If you are interested in adopting Quix, please submit an application and a volunteer will be in touch (KF/MC).
