Jessie is the 5th dog I’ve fostered with RocketDog rescue this year, and simply put, he is a sweet, entertaining, and very commandable dog – he is ready in every respect for a forever-home. Its hard to describe his qualities in written form as seeing him for 5 seconds will communicate his spirit so much better 🙂 Don’t be dissuaded by his age (9 months) – he is very owner-friendly, much lower-maintenance than one would expect of a 9-month old.
Jessie is a spayed male with medium stature at around 35 lbs, and looks to be a 50-50 Weimaraner and Pit mix. He was rescued from SF Animal Control last week where he spent the last 3 1/2 months of his life. He was losing weight and was deeply stressed in that environment (fast forward to today, and he is anything but stressed). RocketDog Rescue stepped in last Tuesday to bail him out, and he’s been with me this last week. He is fascinated by and in love with the world…
Despite his age and recent history at animal control, Jessie’s temperament really exceptional. He is incredibly sweet, but surprisingly is not needy or insecure (amazing given the deprivation he had to suffer through the last 3 1/2 months). His household manners are excellent. He is very mild-mannered in the house and not high-strung at all – he usually goes into his crate and snoozes away or chews on his doggy toys and leaves you alone to do your thing. He is now able to navigate himself out of my unit, through the garage, down the stairs, through the basement and into the backyard to do his business, then return and lay down in his crate while I work in my office – I did not train him to do this… I’ve left him alone in his crate for a few hours at a time without incident – just came home to find him still laying down staring at me 🙂 He sleeps in his crate at night without issue. He’s not eaten off the coffee table when I accidentally left food out – it was right there for the taking too. He has had a couple of #2 accidents, but please understand that I was liberally feeding him 5-6 times a day the last week so timing his BM’s was hit and miss (he was desperately thin – he has probably put on 2 lbs and looks FAR healthier). I’m down to feeding him 3 times a day now without any potty issues currently.
Surprisingly yet again, Jessie is a piece of cake off-leash. On walks he will regularly wander up to a 20 foot radius but generally remains attentive to where I am – whistle or call his name, and he comes. At Crissy Field, his behavior and temperament with other dogs is fantastic and leaves me with no concerns. He usually finds one or two playmates early on and plays spiritedly with them until both are tuckered out, then he spends the rest of the time wandering around being very curious with the other dogs, and running/sprinting around on occasion. He will disengage with other dogs when I whistle or call his name and will generally trot over reliably (again, a bit rare for a 9-month old). He’s taken to fetching sticks outside and tennis balls at home.
He is friendly and curious with all people, including children (see video). He is generally very quiet at home, but has barked a couple of times at noises out in the street. He enjoys playing and is typically a bit mouthy (like a normal pup), but does not bite.
He is handsome as all get-up and gets lots of attention wherever he goes. Hands-down, Jessie is a winner and is going to bring a lot of joy entertainment, and love to a lucky owner 🙂
