ADOPTION PENDING
Aside from being an absolutely gorgeous dog, Gunner is a wonderful companion! He is a sweet, sweet boy! He has an amazing personality, tremendous energy (more on that later) and is an all-around wonderful pup! He is also super-smart! He learns commands (sit, down, shake—both paws) within only a few tries. He really wants to learn. He is so curious and inquisitive, although sometimes it leads him to “investigate” items on the kitchen counter. We think he’s around a year old, and a blue tick walker hound.
A simple “Gunner, no” has proved effective. He should be monitored closely to correct this behavior. He has great “puppy” energy—he’s like a big goofy teenager. He LOVES to play with toys (and will even toss them around while he plays by himself) but should have a lot of stimulation (walks, dog park, large fenced-in yard/dog run) to wear him out so he avoids becoming bored—he wants to WORK! At the end of the day he loves to snuggle on the bed, but if that isn’t your scene, he will sleep on his dog bed on the floor no problem. He will let you know when he needs to go outside to do his business: standing by the door, then tapping it with a paw if you are not paying attention. We are working on his leash manners. He likes to bay when he sees a dog, which can sometime be a little obnoxious (he is a hound after all).
He is not aggressive at all, he is just excited, wants to investigate/greet and get the other dogs hyped! So, he can be very adamant. We want him to know not allbarking is bad, but when we say, “Gunner, quiet”, he needs to stop barking. Because hounds are so smart, they are also very willful and need to reinforcement constantly and consistently until the behavior is corrected. The ideal home for Gunner would be one where he gets a lot of exercise! 1-2 hours/day of hard exercise (with more on the weekends) should be fine.
He loves to go on runs and loves to run with the other dogs at the dog park—and to watch him at a full gallop with a big smile on his face is a thing of absolute beauty! He loves to sniff around too. There is a large field behind the house where we will put him on a 20’ leash and just let him do his thing. It is so fascinating to watch him follow scents, nose right to the ground, as we walk/jog/run behind him. He has been great with our other dog (a 9 1/2 yo lab) but there is an energy-level disparity, so please keep that in mind. He needs companions who will be patient, but diligent with working on commands/correction of unwanted behaviors. In essence he needs a strong “pack leader” to follow. He also loves to go for rides in the car—wherever you are, that’s where he wants to be. What more could you ask for?? Basically, he is an incredibly, sweet, smart, handsome, very-energetic boy and needs a home and people who will give him a lot of exercise and work with him to correct some of the common behaviors hounds come into this world with. If he can have that—he will repay you with endless laughs from a really funny personality and amaze you with his extreme intelligence! Hound Experience is a plus*
