Marshall is a 3-4 year Australian Cattle Dog and Smooth Collie Mix. Likely a yard or free-roaming dog prior to his rescue, Marshall is working hard to learn all the manners and etiquette of being a loved family companion!
He has medium energy, and while he requires about an hour or so of exercise a day, he is fairly relaxed in the home. Most nights he plops himself down on his dog bed while his foster mom cooks! Marshall has gotten along with all dogs he has been introduced to. He has not been tested with cats, but could be workable if you have experience with doing introductions slowly and safely. He is being fostered in a multi-dog home, and has had no issues with guarding or jealousy. His play style is a little mouthy and loud, but he is responsive to the other dog, as well as the person supervising. Because this style of play can be over-arousing, Marshall would be best suited for wide open parks like Funston and Point Isabel, than small fenced-in parks. He currently goes on group walks, and would do fine transitioning to a daily dog walker if your circumstances require it.
Because of his past, Marshall is behind on some of the basic manners required for a polite companion. He enjoys training and catches on easily, but he will require structure to prevent problem behaviors from occurring. He is crate-trained, and is able to sleep in it overnight and while he is left home alone. He does vocalize occasionally in the crate, but is really improving on remaining quiet even when dogs are around. But this will require commitment and some time to work on, so he may not be a great option for apartment buildings with irritable neighbors! His house-training is on the right path, but he will need a lot of supervision and reinforcement when moving to his forever home to keep it up! He can be mouthy (although very gentle), so no super young children.
Marshall is a wonderful dog. Despite having a rough past, he is always happy and cheerful and ready for anything. He would be a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys hiking, camping, or backpacking. If you are dedicated to his training, he would be an amazing dog to bring to your work or studio.
